Make it possible to change field type in custom modules

I’m posting this request based on the following conversation:
Continuing the discussion from Changing Field Type in Custom Properties:

Apparently it’s currently not possible to change a field type after it has been created. The system gives notification that seem to show it is happening, but the field type doesn’t actually change.
